The decade’s most ambitious art project on Latvian soil – the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre – getting set for its tenth anniversary.

The multifunctional hub for contemporary art, culture and education bearing the name of the world-renowned artist Mark Rothko occupies the former artillery arsenal building in Daugavpils Fortress, offering permanent and temporary exhibitions across 2500 square metres of gallery space. In addition, it hosts international symposiums for artists in different mediums, organises creative workshops and master classes and delivers educational programmes for children and youth. The offer also includes seminar and conference rooms, a chamber hall with a grand piano, accommodations for artists and other guests, a well-stocked library for research and a spectacular location for stimulating walks.

Last year, a new and long-awaited cultural venue – The Martinsons House – threw open its doors in the Rothko Centre courtyard. Under its roof, visitors can see a permanent exhibition of ceramicist Pēteris Martinsons, “The City of Dreams”, enjoy temporary ceramic exhibitions and explore a vast open-storage ceramic collection.

Balttour 2023 visitors will learn about the Rothko Centre’s 10th-anniversary programme, which is set to run from 21 to 28 April and fill an entire week with concerts, performances, exhibition openings, unveilings of open-air art objects and the formal presentation of a new set of Mark Rothko’s original paintings never exhibited on Latvian soil.

Besides, visitors will be introduced to the Rothko Centre’s exhibition season schedule for 2023 and informed about other events and opportunities for tourists from the cultural, entertainment and business sectors.

Along with handouts and flyers about the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre, Balttour 2023 visitors will have access to free art catalogues and souvenirs.
